The call every procurement manager dreads: “That part’s been discontinued. End of life.” Lead time Unknown. Tooling? Scrapped. The production line that depends on it? Your problem.

This is where most companies scramble for six months. RYSE 3D customers call us on Monday and have parts by Friday.

The problem is bigger than you think

Obsolescence is one of manufacturing’s most expensive and least-discussed crises. It doesn’t just affect aerospace and defence (though they feel it acutely). It hits automotive production lines, industrial equipment operators, food processing facilities, and energy infrastructure – anywhere complex machinery runs for decades longer than its supply chain was designed to support.

The numbers are unforgiving. When a single obsolete bracket, housing, or manifold component takes down a production line, downtime costs can reach £10,000 – £50,000 per hour depending on the operation. The traditional routes – retooling, casting, or finding an alternative supplier – take months. Months the business doesn’t have.

The hard truth: Most manufacturers hold no inventory for parts classified as “low usage.” Until a failure. Then that single £8 bracket becomes a £200,000 problem.

What parts are we talking about?

Here’s where it gets practical. These are the exact types of obsolete parts RYSE 3D produces on demand – right now, for customers across automotive, defence, and industrial sectors.

01 Automotive Interior Trim & Panels

FDM · CARBON FIBRE COMPOSITE

Door inserts, console housings, vent surrounds, and switch bezels for classic and heritage vehicles where tooling no longer exists.

02 Fluid & Pneumatic Manifolds

MJF · SLS

Complex internal channel geometry in high-performance nylon – now produced in days, no tooling required.

03 Gearbox & Drivetrain Housings

FDM · MJF

Structural polymer enclosures for legacy transmissions in commercial vehicles and off-highway machinery. Toleranced for fit, form, and function.

04 Industrial Jigs, Clamps & Fixtures

FDM · CARBON FIBRE

Production tooling that’s worn, cracked, or no longer supported by the original equipment manufacturer.

05 Electronic Enclosures & Connectors

MJF · SLS

Housings for legacy control systems, terminal blocks, and ECU brackets – particularly critical in defence and energy sectors.

06 Ducting, Vents & Air Management

FDM · SLS

Complex curved geometries for HVAC, under-bonnet cooling, and industrial airflow systems – impossible to source, straightforward to print.

07 Pump Bodies & Valve Blocks

MJF · SLS

High-density nylon pump housings and valve bodies for low-pressure fluid systems – no tooling, no minimum order, fast turnaround.

08 Heritage & Classic Vehicle Components

FDM · MJF · SLS

From pre-war motorcycles to 1990s classics – scan, reverse engineer, and reproduce any part where the original is gone forever.

How it actually works

Step 1 – Send us the part or the data

Have a physical sample? We 3D scan it. Have an old CAD file or a drawing from the ’90s? We work with it. Have neither? Our engineers will reverse-engineer from photographs and measurements. We’ve done all three.

Step 2 – Material & process selection

This is where RYSE 3D’s production-grade expertise matters. We don’t just print in whatever’s loaded on the machine. We match the part to the right process – FDM for structural engineering polymers and carbon fibre composites, MJF for complex functional geometries with isotropic properties, SLS where surface finish and detail resolution demand it. The wrong process produces a part that fails in the field. The right one lasts as long as the original.

Step 3 – First article & qualification

We produce a first article, inspect to your tolerances, and document everything under our ISO 9001 quality management system. You get a part file, a material traceability record, and a production route you can call on again – not a one-off bodge.

Step 4 – Ongoing supply or digital inventory

Once qualified, your part exists as a permanent digital asset. Order 1 or order 1,000. No MOQ, no tooling cost, no warehouse. This is what digital warehousing actually looks like in practice – and it’s available today.

Who should be reading this?

If you’re a Tier 1 automotive supplier, you almost certainly have legacy programmes still running on platforms where parts availability is quietly becoming a crisis. The conversation is usually avoided until a line stops.

If you’re in defence or government procurement, obsolescence management is a known problem with a known cost – but the solutions on offer are still largely traditional. Additive manufacturing has closed that gap.

If you run industrial or processing equipment from the 80s, 90s, or early 2000s, you’ve probably already had the “we can’t get that anymore” conversation. Now there’s an answer that doesn’t require a six-month casting run or buying a second machine for parts.

King’s Award for Innovation. ISO 9001. Over 2 million partsproduced.

RYSE 3D isn’t a prototyping bureau. We’re a production-grade additive manufacturer – and obsolescence is one of the most direct use cases for everything we’ve built.

The competitive reality

Here’s what’s interesting about the obsolete parts market: almost nobody is going after it directly. The large AM bureaus are focused on new product development and high-volume commodity printing. Traditional manufacturers won’t touch short runs. Cast and machined alternatives require tooling investment that makes no economic sense below a certain volume.

That leaves a significant gap – production-quality, low-volume, fast- turnaround parts for programmes that never anticipated needing them. RYSE 3D was built for exactly this.

Next steps

If you have a discontinued part, a legacy component, or a programme running on borrowed time, the conversation costs nothing. Send us a drawing, a scan, or a photograph. Tell us what material properties you need, what your volumes look like, and what your timeline is.

We’ll tell you whether additive manufacturing is the right answer. If it is, we’ll have a quote with you faster than the alternatives will have answered their phone.
