Overview

The grade that survives daylight

Sunlight is what finishes most printed plastics. UV breaks the polymer chains down: colours fade, surfaces chalk, and a part that felt solid in month one cracks when you flex it in month twelve. ASA is formulated specifically to resist that, and it is the only UV-stable grade in our FDM range.

On every other measure it sits close to ABS — 37 MPa tensile strength against 33, and 19.6 kJ/m² notched impact against 21.5. It holds more heat than ABS, at 100 °C against 87. The trade is ductility: at 9.2% elongation ASA is less forgiving than ABS.

Honest limits

Where ASA is the wrong call

ASA is specified for one property, and outside that one property there are better answers in our range. Where any of these describe your part, we’ll say so at quote and spec the grade that fits — free, before you commit.

Indoor parts on a budget

If the part never sees daylight you are paying for weathering you will not use. ABS costs less, matches the heat resistance and is far more ductile.

Real load-carrying parts

At 37 MPa ASA is a housing material, not a bracket material. For parts that carry load, PA6-GF (80 MPa) or PA6-CF (109 MPa).

Snap-fits & flexing parts

9.2% elongation is less than half ABS. Where a feature has to deflect repeatedly without cracking, ABS at 10.5% or PA12-CF at 12% with far higher strength are better suited.

Sustained heat

A 100 °C heat deflection temperature covers a hot roof, not an engine bay. For real heat, PET-CF holds 205 °C.

Flame-rated parts

ASA carries no flame rating. Where ignition is the constraint, specify PC-FR flame retardant polycarbonate, our only UL94 V-0 grade.

Tight tolerances on big flat parts

Shrinkage makes wide flat styrenic geometry hard to hold dimensionally. Where tolerance is critical, PA12-CF is dimensionally stable, or powder-bed MJF sidesteps it.

ASA vs ABS vs PETG-CF

On paper these three are close, and the spec sheet is not really where the decision gets made. ASA earns its place on one row — UV stability — and if the part is going outside, that row settles it before the others matter. Indoors, ABS does the same job for less and bends further before it breaks. Need stiffness at room temperature? PETG-CF. Full range on all FDM materials.

What is ASA 3D printing?
ASA is a weatherable thermoplastic printed on our large-format FDM platform, and the only UV-stable grade in our range. It offers 37 MPa tensile strength, a 100 °C heat deflection temperature and 19.6 kJ/m² notched impact. It is specified for outdoor enclosures, covers, housings and exterior trim — parts that have to keep their colour and their strength in daylight.
Is ASA good for outdoor use?
Yes — that is the entire reason to specify it. ASA is formulated to resist ultraviolet degradation, so it holds its colour and its mechanical properties in sunlight rather than yellowing, chalking and turning brittle the way ABS does. The UV resistance is inherent to the polymer rather than a surface coating, so it is not lost if the part is drilled, machined or scuffed in service.
ASA or ABS — which should I choose?
One question decides it: is the part going outside? If yes, ASA, because ABS degrades in sunlight and no amount of extra wall thickness fixes that. If no, ABS is the better buy — it costs less and is the more ductile at 10.5% elongation against 9.2%, though ASA holds more heat (100 vs 87 °C) and is slightly stronger (37 vs 33 MPa). ABS is the tougher of the two on impact at 21.5 against 19.6 kJ/m².
How strong is ASA?
37 MPa tensile strength with 19.6 kJ/m² notched impact, a tough figure for a general-purpose grade. Elongation at break is 9.2%, so it is stiffer and less forgiving than ABS. It is a housing and cover material rather than a load-carrying one; for load-bearing parts we would point you at PA6-GF or PA6-CF.
What is ASA used for?

Does ASA warp?
ASA shrinks as it cools like every styrenic, so wide unsupported flat areas are the classic warp risk. It is a geometry and orientation problem rather than a material fault: ribs, a split, or rotating the part usually resolves it. We review the geometry free with your quote and flag anything likely to move before it is printed.
