What SLS parts look like before, and after

A nylon part straight out of the SLS or MJF powder bed has a matte, slightly chalky surface and a fine open porosity you can feel. For plenty of engineering parts that is completely acceptable. For anything customer-facing, anything that will be dyed, or anything where the tactile quality matters, it is the starting point rather than the finish.

Shot blast polishing takes it the rest of the way. A stream of specialist polishing media is driven at the surface under high pressure — not to strip material like a coarse blast, but to compact and refine it. Roughness comes down, the open porosity closes, and the part is left smooth, even and consistent, with a subtle uniform sheen.

How it works

The process, step by step

Depowder & clean

Parts come out of the powder bed and are cleaned of all loose, unsintered powder so the surface underneath is exposed evenly.

High-pressure media polish

Specialist spherical polishing media — not granular blast grit — is propelled at the surface at high velocity, compacting rather than cutting it.

Roughness & porosity reduced

The impacts flatten the micro-peaks of the sintered surface and close the fine open porosity, lowering surface roughness across the whole part.

Even, dye-ready finish

What is left is a smooth, uniform surface with a consistent subtle sheen — and the ideal base for an even, deep dye.

Why it is our standard step before dyeing

Dye colours the surface it is given. On a raw, porous, uneven SLS surface, colour takes unevenly and looks flat. That is why we blast polish as standard before dyeing — it is not an upsell, it is how we get a good dye result.

The compacted, refined surface accepts dye evenly and reads deeper and richer, with far better consistency from part to part across a production batch. If you are ordering dyed SLS parts, they are blast polished first as a matter of course.

When blast polishing is not the answer

FDM layer lines

This is a powder-bed finish. It will not remove the layer lines on an FDM part — for those, vibro polishing or vapour smoothing are the right processes.

A mirror or gloss finish

Blast polishing gives a smooth surface with a subtle sheen, not a high gloss. For a glossy sealed look, vapour smoothing; for a painted show surface, A-class paint.

Fatigue-critical surface strengthening

If the goal is compressive stress and fatigue life rather than appearance, that is shot peening — a related but different process, and not one we offer on printed polymer parts.

Sharp crisp edges

Any media process softens the very sharpest edges slightly. Where a knife-edge is critical, tell us and we will mask or plan around it.

What is shot blast polishing?
Shot blast polishing is a surface finishing process for powder-bed 3D printed parts. High-pressure specialist polishing media is propelled at the surface to compact and refine it rather than cut it away, reducing roughness and closing the fine open porosity left by SLS and MJF printing. The result is a smooth, even surface with a subtle uniform sheen.
How is it different from bead blasting or shot peening?
Standard bead blasting cleans and matts a surface; shot peening drives compressive stress into it to improve fatigue strength. Shot blast polishing uses specialist spherical polishing media at high pressure specifically to compact and smooth the surface for appearance and dye quality. They are related processes with different media and different goals.
Which materials can be shot blast polished?
It is a powder-bed process, run on SLS and MJF nylons including PA11, PA12 and filled grades. It is not an FDM finish — FDM layer lines need vibro polishing or vapour smoothing instead.
Do you blast polish before dyeing?
Yes, as standard. Dye takes evenly only on an even surface, so blast polishing is our standard preparation step before dyeing SLS parts. The compacted, refined surface accepts colour more deeply and consistently, which is why dyed parts are blast polished first as a matter of course.
Does blast polishing change the part dimensions?
It compacts the surface rather than removing significant material, so the effect on dimensions is minimal, but any media process will slightly soften the sharpest edges. If you have tolerance-critical features or crisp edges that must be preserved, tell us at quote and we will plan and inspect around them.
What finish does it leave?
A smooth, even surface with a subtle uniform sheen and a premium tactile feel — noticeably smoother and less chalky than a depowdered or bead-blasted-only part. It is not a high gloss; for that, vapour smoothing or A-class paint are the routes.
Can you blast polish parts printed elsewhere?
Yes, subject to material and size. If you have SLS or MJF nylon parts from another source that need a better surface or preparation for dyeing, send us the details and we will confirm before you ship them.
How much does shot blast polishing cost?
It is quoted with the part, since cost depends on part size, quantity and whether it is being dyed afterwards. Add it to an instant quote or contact us for parts printed elsewhere.
