MJF impact figures are notched, quoted in kJ/m². Our SLS grades quote notched Izod to ASTM D256-10 in J/m — a different method on a different scale, so the two cannot be ranked against each other. TPU 01 is an elastomer and its tensile figure is not comparable with the rigid nylons above.

What is MJF 3D printing used for?

MJF fuses a whole bed of parts in one pass rather than tracing them one at a time, so the 300th part matches the first and cost per part falls as the bed fills. That makes it our production process of choice — no tooling, no supports, and the same nylon from the first prototype through to a run of 100,000.

End-use production parts

Repeatable batches of finished components, dimensionally consistent across the bed and across repeat orders — not approximations of a moulded part.

Housings, enclosures & ducting

PA 12 handles thin walls, curved geometry and internal channels that would need tooling or splitting elsewhere, and holds dimension to a 175 °C heat deflection.

Watertight parts

PA 12 prints watertight, so fluid housings, sealed enclosures and closed-volume ducting hold without a secondary sealing operation.

Snap-fits, clips & living hinges

PA 11 Gen2 at 35% elongation and 6.0 kJ/m² notched impact flexes and rebounds rather than cracking — the grade for anything that has to click together repeatedly.

Lattices, seals & grips

TPU 01 stretches to 291% with 63% rebound, and lattice geometry builds in loose powder with no supports to pick out of the cells afterwards.

Bridge to injection moulding

Volume without tooling cost or lead time — useful while a tool is being cut, or where the annual quantity never justifies one.

How does MJF 3D printing work?
Multi Jet Fusion spreads a thin layer of nylon powder across the bed, then an inkjet carriage passes over it depositing a fusing agent where the part cross-section sits and a detailing agent around its edges. Infrared lamps sweep the bed and the treated areas fuse in a single pass. The bed drops, a fresh layer is spread, and the cycle repeats. Because whole layers fuse at once rather than being traced point by point, builds are fast and consistent across the bed.
Does MJF 3D printing need support material?
No. Parts sit in a cake of unfused powder that supports the geometry as it builds, so overhangs, undercuts, internal channels and captive moving assemblies all print with nothing to remove afterwards and no support witness marks on the surface. Complex geometry costs nothing extra — the price is driven by how much of the build volume the part occupies.
What colour are MJF 3D printed parts?
MJF parts come off the machine grey and are bead-blasted as standard. From there most production work is through-dyed black, which penetrates the surface rather than coating it, so it will not chip at edges or change part dimensions. Parts can also be vapour smoothed to a sealed semi-gloss skin. We do not offer colour dyeing — grey and black are the range.
What is the largest MJF part you can print?
Our MJF build envelope is 380 × 284 × 380 mm in one piece. For larger parts we split the geometry, print the sections, bond them and inspect the finished assembly — or move the job to SLS, where carbon-filled PA12-CF runs up to 490 × 490 × 740 mm, or FDM at 500 × 500 × 900 mm in a single piece.
Are MJF parts watertight?
PA 12 prints watertight, which is why it is our pick for fluid housings, sealed enclosures and closed-volume ducting — no secondary sealing operation needed. Tell us the pressure the part has to hold and our engineers will confirm whether it is suitable before you commit.
Is MJF or SLS better for my part?
Both fuse nylon powder and both print without supports, so the decision comes down to material and finish. Choose MJF for repeatable production batches, a through-dyed black finish and consistent fine detail across the bed. Choose SLS for the wider material range — PA11, glass- and carbon-filled grades and TPU 90A — for greater ductility, and for parts too large for the MJF bed. How can I make my MJF order cheaper?
MJF prices on the share of the build volume your parts occupy, so the more densely the bed nests the lower the cost per part. Order the full quantity in one build rather than in repeat small batches, hollow or lightweight solid sections where the design allows, and send parts that pack together well. Our engineers nest the build for you — upload the CAD and the volume pricing is calculated automatically.
How long does MJF 3D printing take?
Typically 5–7 days, printed, finished and inspected. That covers the build itself, cooling and depowdering, then bead blasting, dyeing or vapour smoothing as specified, all in-house at our ISO 9001 facility in Shipston-on-Stour, Warwickshire.
