Overview

Where the plastic part meets the metal fastener

A printed thread stripped after a handful of cycles is one of the most common ways a good part fails in service. Plastic threads wear, and a bolt torqued straight into printed material will not hold up to repeated assembly. The fix is not a different plastic — it is the right metal fixing, installed properly.

We install threaded inserts to give printed parts strong, reusable metal threads, and bonded fasteners, including Bighead fixings, to create load-spreading attachment points where there is no room for a nut or boss. It is the step that turns a printed component into something that bolts into an assembly and stays there.

Heat-set threaded inserts

Brass inserts installed with controlled heat and pressure so the plastic reflows around the knurled body and locks it in. The standard choice for FDM and a strong, reusable metal thread in a printed boss.

Press-fit & moulded-in inserts

Inserts sized to press into a printed or moulded hole, or captured in the part during production — used where heat setting is not suitable for the material or geometry.

Bonded fasteners (Bighead)

Perforated-base studs, bosses and plates bonded to a surface to spread load over a wide area. Ideal where the wall is thin, access is one-sided, or a fixing point is needed with no boss to tap.

Studs, standoffs & captive nuts

Metal hardware installed to create mounting points, spacers and captive threads for panels, covers and enclosures that are assembled and disassembled repeatedly.

Get the boss right and the thread lasts

An insert is only as good as the feature it sits in. Send us the CAD and we will check the fixing details free with your quote — but these are the essentials.

Boss diameter Size the boss around the insert so there is enough wall to reflow and grip — too thin and it splits, too tight and it will not seat
Hole size Heat-set inserts need the correct pilot hole for the insert series — tell us the insert or the thread and we will set it
Bonded-fixing footprint A perforated base needs a flat, clean area to bond to — design in a landing pad where you want the fixing
Thread size Common metric threads are straightforward; tell us the fastener that mates to it so we install the matching insert
Access Note which fixings are blind or one-sided so we choose a bonded fastener rather than an insert where needed

Honest limits

What to know before you spec them

The boss has to be designed for it

An insert cannot rescue a boss that is too thin or too small. Where the CAD has no room for a proper fixing, we will flag it at quote so it can be corrected before printing — that review is free.

Not a substitute for the right material

If a part is failing under load, a metal thread fixes the thread, not the part. For a stiffer, more load-capable component, choose the grade first — PA6-CF or PA6-GF — then add the fixing.

Bonded fixings need a suitable surface

A perforated-base fastener bonds best to a clean, reasonably flat area. Highly textured or contaminated surfaces need preparation, which affects time and cost.

Very high loads have a ceiling

Inserts and bonded fixings are strong, but they are not a welded metal bracket. Tell us the load and we will be straight about whether the fixing suits it or the part needs a metal component instead.

Fit them before the finish, not after

Installation reflows or bonds to the surface, so hardware normally goes in before painting or dyeing. Tell us the full route at quote and we will sequence it correctly.

We fit hardware, we do not spec fasteners

Tell us the thread and the mating fastener and we will install to match. Choosing the bolt grade and torque figure for your application stays with your engineering team.

What is a threaded insert in 3D printing?
A threaded insert is a metal component — usually brass — installed into a printed part to give it a strong, reusable metal thread. Because plastic threads wear and strip under repeated assembly, an insert lets a printed part be bolted together and taken apart many times without damaging the thread. We most commonly heat-set inserts, which use controlled heat and pressure to reflow the plastic around the insert body.
What are Bighead fixings?
Bighead fixings are bonded fasteners with a perforated base — studs, bosses and plates that bond to a surface and spread load across a wide footprint. They are used where there is no room to tap a thread, where a wall is too thin for an insert, or where a fixing point is needed with access from only one side. We install them alongside threaded inserts to create load-bearing attachment points on printed parts.
Why not just print the thread?
A thread printed or cut directly into plastic works for light, occasional use, but it wears quickly and strips under repeated assembly or higher torque. A metal insert gives a durable, reusable thread that behaves like one in a machined metal part — which is what most functional and production parts need.
Which materials can you install inserts into?
Most printed materials take inserts and bonded fixings — FDM, SLS, MJF and SLA parts. The installation method is matched to the material and geometry: heat-set inserts suit most thermoplastics, while press-fit, moulded-in or bonded options are used where heat setting is not appropriate.
Can you add fixings to a part I designed?
Yes. Send us the CAD and tell us where the fixings go and what threads you need. We review the boss sizing and fixing placement free with your quote and will flag anything that needs adjusting before the part is printed, so the fixings hold as intended.
Do you install inserts on production batches?
Yes. We install inserts and bonded fasteners on single prototypes and on production batches with many fixings per part, fitted consistently and inspected in-house as part of the same workflow that prints and finishes the parts.
How strong are installed inserts and fixings?
A correctly installed insert provides a metal thread that takes far more torque and far more assembly cycles than plastic, and a bonded fastener spreads load over a wide base to survive on thin or one-sided walls. They are not a replacement for a welded metal bracket under extreme load — tell us the load and we will confirm the fixing suits it.
