Rigidity at room temperature — and honesty about the rest

PETG-CF is carbon-filled PETG, and it is on this list for one reason: rigidity. Chopped carbon fibre stiffens the polymer so a bracket or fixture holds its shape under a steady load instead of creeping, and it gives the matte black finish people associate with technical parts.

Read the spec table below carefully, though, because the numbers do not tell that story. Stiffness is a modulus property, and the four figures we publish — tensile strength, elongation, heat deflection and impact — do not measure it. Against ABS and ASA, PETG-CF does not lead any of those four. What it offers is carbon reinforcement and dimensional steadiness that unfilled styrenics cannot match.

The hard constraint is heat. A 74 °C heat deflection temperature is the lowest in our FDM range, so this is an ambient-temperature material. Warm the part and it softens — at which point PET-CF, one letter away and nearly three times the heat resistance, is the grade you actually want.

Honest limits

Where PETG-CF is the wrong call

This grade has a narrower window than most of our range, and we would rather set it out plainly than have a part soften on you. Any of these apply, and we’ll spec the better grade free with your quote.

Anything warm

74 °C is the lowest heat deflection temperature we print. One letter away, PET-CF holds 205 °C — nearly three times as much — and is the direct step up for the same kind of fixture.

Impact & abuse

At 15.7 kJ/m² this is the least impact-tough grade in the general-purpose group. Where parts get dropped or knocked, ABS (21.5) or ASA (19.6) absorb far more.

Real load-carrying parts

Carbon-filled is not the same as strong: 35 MPa is a light-duty figure. For load-bearing brackets, PA6-GF (80 MPa) or PA6-CF (109 MPa) are the grades that carry it.

Outdoor exposure

PETG-CF is not UV-stabilised, and the 74 °C ceiling makes direct summer sun a genuine risk on a dark part. Outdoors, use ASA.

Flexing features

10.4% elongation is mid-range and the fibre makes it less forgiving still. For snap-fits and living hinges, ABS at 10.5% is the more suitable grade.

Flame-rated parts

No flame rating. Where ignition is the constraint, specify PC-FR flame retardant polycarbonate, our only UL94 V-0 grade.

What is PETG-CF carbon fibre PETG?
PETG-CF is PETG reinforced with chopped carbon fibre, printed on our large-format FDM platform. The fibre stiffens the part and gives a matte black technical finish. PETG-CF or PET-CF — what is the difference?
One letter, and a very large difference in heat resistance. PETG-CF has a 74 °C heat deflection temperature; PET-CF holds 205 °C, roughly three times as much, and is stronger at 74 MPa against 35 MPa. PETG-CF is the ambient-temperature option and prints on our large-format platform up to 900 mm; PET-CF runs in our dedicated high-temperature chamber. If the part will ever be warm, specify PET-CF.
How strong is PETG-CF?
35 MPa tensile strength with 10.4% elongation and 15.7 kJ/m² notched impact. Carbon reinforcement makes it stiff rather than strong — the fibre resists deflection and bending under steady load, but the tensile figure is light-duty. For genuinely load-bearing parts, PA6-GF at 80 MPa or PA6-CF at 109 MPa are the appropriate grades.
How much heat can PETG-CF take?
Its heat deflection temperature is 74 °C, the lowest of the ten FDM grades we print. That is lower than it sounds in practice: direct summer sun on a dark part, an enclosed cabinet or proximity to a motor can all approach it. Treat PETG-CF as an ambient-temperature material and step up to PET-CF at 205 °C if there is any doubt.
What is PETG-CF used for?
Technical brackets, assembly fixtures, jigs and workholding, machine guarding, frame and rail components, camera and sensor mounts, panel supports, robotics mounts and test rig parts — up to 500 × 500 × 900 mm in one piece.
PETG-CF or ABS — which should I choose?
PETG-CF for rigidity and dimensional steadiness in a fixture that must hold its shape; ABS for cost, impact toughness and ductility. ABS is tougher (21.5 vs 15.7 kJ/m²), marginally more ductile (10.5% vs 10.4% elongation) and handles more heat (87 vs 74 °C). PETG-CF earns its place on carbon reinforcement and the stiffness that comes with it, not on those four numbers.
Is PETG-CF good for outdoor use?
No. It is not UV-stabilised, and the 74 °C heat deflection temperature makes direct sunlight on a dark part a real risk in summer. ASA is the UV-stable grade for anything living outdoors.
