Overview

When ignition is the constraint

Most engineering plastics are specified on strength or heat. PC-FR is specified on what happens when something goes wrong. It is the only grade in our FDM range whose base resin carries a UL94 V-0 flame rating — self-extinguishing, non-dripping, and the material you reach for when a casing sits next to a power supply, a battery pack or a motor, and the failure mode you are designing against is fire rather than fracture.

Underneath the rating it is a genuinely usable engineering blend: 60 MPa tensile strength, a 125 °C heat deflection temperature and 10% elongation at break — far more ductile than either of the carbon grades that share its chamber. Printed in our dedicated high-temperature chamber and finished in-house, with 1–3 day express turnaround available.

Honest limits

Where PC-FR is the wrong call

Engineering materials are picked on what they can’t do as much as what they can. If any of these apply, we’ll spec you a better grade — free, with your quote.

Real load-carrying parts

At 60 MPa this is the softest grade in our high-temperature chamber. Where the part carries real load, PA6-CF (109 MPa) or PPA-CF (98 MPa, the strongest we print) are the rigid picks.

Sustained heat

A 125 °C heat deflection temperature is the lowest of our three chamber grades — PC-FR is in there because a PC-based blend needs heat to print, not because it beats the others in service. For hot tooling, PET-CF holds 205 °C.

Outdoor & UV exposure

PC/ABS yellows and embrittles under prolonged UV. For enclosures that live outside, ASA is the UV-stable grade — though note it carries no flame rating.

Fine detail & cosmetic FR parts

FDM layer lines limit how crisp a flame-rated part can be. For smooth, detailed V-0 parts, our UL94 V-0 SLA resin is the better process.

ESD-sensitive electronics

Flame-retardant does not mean static-dissipative — PC-FR is insulative. For handling sensitive electronics, use our dedicated ESD resin.

Chemical exposure

PC/ABS is attacked by many solvents, fuels and strong alkalis. Tell us what the part will see and we’ll check compatibility before you order.

All three print in our high-temperature chamber, so lead times and part sizes match. PC-FR wins two rows — the flame rating and, by a wide margin, ductility. If ignition is your constraint, the first of those decides the part on its own. What is PC-FR flame retardant polycarbonate?
PC-FR is a flame-retardant PC/ABS blend printed on our dedicated high-temperature FDM chamber. Its base resin carries a UL94 V-0 rating at 1.5 mm — self-extinguishing and non-dripping — alongside 60 MPa tensile strength, a 125 °C heat deflection temperature and 10% elongation at break. It is the grade for protective casings and enclosures where flammability, not load or heat, is the constraint.
Is PC-FR UL94 V-0?
The base resin is rated UL94 V-0 at 1.5 mm, and PC-FR is the only grade in our FDM range with a flame rating at all. That rating is not automatic certification of a finished printed part — geometry, wall thickness and process conditions all matter — so tell us the thickness your part needs to be rated at and we will confirm it against the supplier certification with your quote.
What is flame retardant 3D printing used for?
Electrical enclosures and control panel covers, battery pack and EV component housings, power supply casings, connector shrouds, switchgear parts, motor housings and rail or transport interior components — anywhere a plastic part shares space with power or heat sources and a specification demands a rating.
How strong is PC-FR?
60 MPa tensile strength with 10% elongation at break and 85 MPa in bending — the softest of our three chamber materials in tension, but by far the most ductile of them. It is specified for its flame rating rather than its mechanical numbers; where the part carries real load we would point you at PA6-CF.
PC-FR or PET-CF — which should I choose?
Choose on the failure you are designing against. PC-FR is the only flame-rated option, so if ignition is the constraint it wins regardless of the other numbers. PET-CF is stronger (74 vs 60 MPa) and holds far more heat (205 vs 125 °C), making it the pick for hot tooling and fixtures. Both print in the same chamber, so lead times match either way.
Does PC-FR handle heat?
Moderate heat, yes — a 125 °C heat deflection temperature suits warm enclosures and enclosed electronics. It is the lowest of our three high-temperature chamber grades, though: PC-FR is printed in that chamber because a PC-based blend needs chamber heat to print without warping, not because it outperforms the others in service. For sustained heat, step up to PET-CF at 205 °C.
