An even satin finish, and the same dimensions you started with

Vibro polishing — vibratory tumbling — is the gentle, repeatable way to take the edge off a printed surface. Parts sit in a bath of abrasive media and water while the bowl vibrates, and the media works over every face at once, knocking back build artefacts and softening layer lines without a person touching each part.

What makes it valuable in production is not just the finish but the consistency. Because the process is mechanical and timed rather than hand-worked, every part in a batch comes out the same — the same even satin surface, the same feel — which is exactly what you want when finished parts sit side by side in an assembly.

It also preserves dimensions. The action is a controlled abrasion rather than aggressive material removal, so critical features survive while the surface improves.

The process, step by step

Load with media

Parts go into a vibratory bowl with abrasive media chosen for the material and the finish, plus water and compound.

Controlled vibration

The bowl oscillates so the media flows continuously over every surface of the part at once, including areas a hand could not reach evenly.

Artefacts knocked back

Build lines, minor witness marks and surface roughness are abraded down gradually while critical dimensions are preserved.

Vibro polishing is not one setting. Media type, vibration intensity and cycle time all change the outcome, so the same process covers a gentle deburr through to a more thorough smoothing.

Honest limits

When vibro polishing is not the answer

A glossy, sealed surface

Vibro polishing gives a satin finish, not a gloss, and it does not seal the surface. For a glossy, sealed, moulded-look finish, vapour smoothing is the process.

The smoothest possible SLS surface

On powder-bed parts headed for dyeing, shot blast polishing compacts the surface for the most even dye result — often the better powder-bed route.

Very delicate or fine features

Thin, fragile features and sharp fine detail can be vulnerable to tumbling. Tell us and we will lighten the process, mask, or suggest an alternative.

Deep internal channels

Media reaches surfaces it can flow over; blind internal passages may not finish evenly. We will flag geometry the media cannot reach.

A show-surface finish

For a defect-free, mirror-level result, vibro polishing is a preparation step, not the finish — that is A-class paint.

Very large parts

Parts have to fit the bowl and move freely in the media. Large single-piece parts are usually better suited to blasting, smoothing or paint preparation — tell us the size at quote.

What is vibro polishing?
Vibro polishing, also called vibratory tumbling, is a mechanical finishing process where 3D printed parts are placed in a vibrating bowl with abrasive media, water and compound. The media flows over every surface at once, gently abrading away build artefacts and softening layer lines to leave an even, satiny finish while preserving the part’s dimensions.
What is the difference between vibro polishing and vapour smoothing?
They produce different finishes by different means. Vibro polishing is mechanical — media tumbling gives an even satin surface and reduces layer lines without sealing the part. Vapour smoothing is chemical — a solvent vapour reflows the surface to a glossy, sealed, injection-moulded look and reduces porosity. Choose vibro polishing for a consistent satin finish and batch uniformity; choose vapour smoothing for gloss and a sealed surface.
Does vibro polishing change part dimensions?
Very little. The process is a controlled abrasion rather than aggressive material removal, so it improves the surface while preserving critical features. On parts with tight tolerances we tune the media and cycle time to protect the dimensions, and finished parts are inspected before they leave.
Which materials can be vibro polished?
Both FDM and powder-bed parts — SLS and MJF nylons as well as FDM thermoplastics. It is particularly useful on FDM parts for reducing the visibility of layer lines and improving overall surface uniformity across a batch.
Is vibro polishing good for production batches?
Yes — it is one of its main strengths. Because the process is timed and mechanical rather than hand-worked, every part in a run finishes to the same standard, and it runs unattended so it scales economically from a handful of parts to a production batch.
Can vibro polished parts be painted or dyed afterwards?
