SLA detail with real toughness

Most SLA resins are stiff but brittle. Black PU is different — it behaves like a cast polyurethane, combining useful strength with high elongation so parts bend, snap-fit and absorb impact without cracking. That makes it the pick for tough resin 3D printing: the fine detail and smooth surface of stereolithography on a part that has to survive real-world handling, not just sit on a shelf.

At 79% elongation at break it is in a different class from a standard rigid resin, which typically fails in single figures. The trade is heat — a 70 °C heat deflection temperature is the lowest of any grade we print, so Black PU is a handling-and-detail material rather than a thermal one. Printed and finished in-house on our Formlabs Form 4L platform, it comes off the machine in a deep, uniform black with a smooth finish that can be sanded, primed or painted for a product-like result.

Our SLA platform

Printed on the Formlabs Form 4L in open mode

Every Black PU part we ship is printed on the Formlabs Form 4L, washed on the Form Wash L and post-cured on the Form Cure L — print, wash, cure and finish all in-house, so nothing leaves the building between the CAD and the finished part. Build envelope is 353 × 196 × 350 mm, large enough for a full-size housing or cover in a single piece rather than split and bonded.

We run the Form 4L in open mode, which means we are not restricted to a single supplier’s resin range. That is what lets us offer a tough cast-urethane-like grade like Black PU alongside the rest of our resin range, and choose the right resin for your part rather than the one the machine came with.

Honest limits

Where SLA Black PU is the wrong call

Black PU buys toughness and surface quality. It is not a strong material and it is not a hot one. These are the cases where a different process wins — told straight, so you don’t find out after the first batch.

Sustained heat

A 70 °C heat deflection temperature is the lowest figure across everything we print. Anything near a motor, a power supply or an engine bay wants PET-CF at 205 °C or PPA-CF at 192 °C instead.

Real load-carrying parts

At 40 MPa this is a fraction of our engineering thermoplastics — PA6-CF reaches 109 MPa. Black PU is specified for detail and handling toughness, not for carrying load.

Parts over 350 mm

The Form 4L platform is 353 × 196 × 350 mm. Beyond that a part has to be split and bonded, and our FDM range prints up to 900 mm in one piece.

Support-free complex geometry

SLA needs supports, and they touch the part. Internal lattices, trapped voids and all-over cosmetic surfaces are better on SLS, where the powder bed carries the part and nothing needs removing.

Any colour but black

Black PU prints black. It takes primer and paint well, but if the part has to be a specific colour through its section, that is a different material conversation — tell us at quote.

Flame-rated or static-sensitive work

Black PU carries no flame rating and is not static-dissipative. Where ignition is the constraint, PC-FR flame retardant PC/ABS is the rated grade — ask us about ESD-safe options for electronics handling.

What is SLA Black PU (Cast-Like) resin?
Black PU is a tough, durable SLA resin with cast-urethane-like toughness — it flexes and takes impact rather than shattering. RYSE 3D prints it on the Formlabs Form 4L for smooth, detailed, functional parts, with 40 MPa tensile strength and 79% elongation at break.
How tough is Black PU resin?
Around 79% elongation at break, which is what separates it from a standard rigid resin failing in single figures. Tensile strength is 40 MPa. In practice that means snap-fits, clips and press-fits survive assembly, and a dropped part is far more likely to bounce than crack.
How is Black PU different from a standard rigid resin?
Ductility. A rigid resin is stiffer and holds its shape harder, but it is brittle — features snap rather than flex. Black PU trades some of that stiffness for roughly an order of magnitude more elongation, so it behaves like a cast polyurethane. Where you need maximum stiffness or heat resistance instead, a ceramic-filled or high-temperature resin is the better pick.
What is Black PU resin used for?

How heat resistant is Black PU?
Not very — heat deflection is 70 °C, the lowest of any grade we print. It suits parts at ambient and mild service temperatures. Anything sitting near a motor, power supply or engine bay should move to an FDM grade such as PET-CF at 205 °C or PPA-CF at 192 °C.
