Post-Processing & Finishing Services

Turn a printed part into a finished component. Overview

The difference between a printed part and a finished one

A part straight off the bed is not a product. It has layer lines, a chalky powder-bed surface or witness marks where supports were. For a functional prototype that is fine. For something a customer sees, touches or relies on in service, it is the last 10% of the job that decides whether it reads as manufactured or as printed.

We finish in-house, on the same site that prints, across both FDM and powder-bed parts — which matters, because a bureau that only runs powder beds can only finish powder-bed parts. Two capabilities are worth singling out: shot blast polishing, which takes SLS parts well beyond the chalky as-printed surface and is the best possible preparation for dyeing, and A-class painting to automotive show-surface standard, which almost no printing bureau offers. Most finishes complete within 24–72 hours of printing — and we can carry a job all the way through to a finished, assembled unit, so parts arrive ready to fit rather than ready to build.

And you do not have to have printed with us. We will finish parts made elsewhere, provided they meet our material and size requirements.

Which finish do you actually need?

Most people arrive asking for “smooth”. It is worth being more specific, because the processes do different jobs and cost different amounts.

Honest limits

What finishing cannot do

Finishing is not magic and it is not free. Knowing where it stops saves you money and disappointment.

Vapour smoothing is material-specific

It works on ABS, ASA, nylon and TPU. It is not available for every grade we print — polycarbonate and carbon-filled PETG among them — so if a glossy sealed finish is essential, choose the material with that in mind and talk to us before you commit.

Bead blasting will not erase layer lines

It evens out and matts the surface, but FDM layer lines need vibro polishing, vapour smoothing or filling and paint to genuinely disappear.

Dyeing is powder-bed only, and black

Dye needs porous nylon to absorb into, so FDM and SLA parts cannot be dyed at all — those go to paint. We run black, and dye cannot hit a RAL or Pantone reference. The full picture is on the black dyeing page.

Critical tolerances need flagging first

Any process that adds a coating or reflows a surface can affect a fit. Tell us which dimensions matter before finishing, not after, and we will plan and inspect around them.

Finishing cannot fix a print problem

A part with the wrong wall thickness or a poor build orientation will still be wrong once it is glossy. We would rather correct the design at quote — that review is free.

Colour matching has limits

Dyed and painted parts can be matched closely, but exact matching to an existing moulded component across every batch and material is something we will assess honestly per project.

It adds time and cost

A finish is a real operation with real hours in it. Where a raw printed part will do the job, we will tell you to save the money.

What is post-processing in 3D printing?
Post-processing is the stage after printing where parts are refined to improve surface quality, appearance and performance. It covers vapour smoothing, vibro polishing, bead blasting, dyeing, painting and coating, plus machining and dimensional inspection where required.
What is vapour smoothing and what does it do?
Vapour smoothing exposes a part to a controlled solvent vapour that softens and reflows the outer layer, fusing the microscopic peaks and valleys into a smooth, glossy surface close to injection moulding. It also seals the surface, reducing porosity and improving resistance to moisture, chemicals and dirt, and it reaches internal features that line-of-sight processes cannot.
Which materials can be vapour smoothed?
Our vapour smoothing process is compatible with ABS, ASA, nylon (PA) and TPU. Other grades in our range are not vapour smoothable, so if a glossy sealed finish is a requirement it is worth choosing the material with that in mind — ask us at quote and we will confirm.
What is shot blast polishing and how is it different from bead blasting?
Bead blasting removes residual powder and evens the surface to a matte finish. Shot blast polishing goes further: high-pressure specialist media compacts the powder-bed surface, cutting roughness and porosity to leave a smooth, dye-ready finish with a premium tactile feel. It is the best preparation we have for dyeing, and it is our signature SLS finish.
What is black dyeing and which parts can be dyed?
Black dyeing immerses powder-bed nylon parts in a heated dye bath so the colour is absorbed into the surface of the polymer rather than coated on top of it. Nothing is added to the surface, so dimensions, threads and clearances are unaffected and there is no coating to chip. It works on SLS PA12, PA11 and PA12-GF and on MJF PA 12 and PA 11 Gen2. FDM and SLA parts cannot be dyed and are painted instead.
Can you finish parts that were printed somewhere else?
Yes. We post-process parts produced on third-party printers or on your own machines, provided they meet our material and size requirements. Get in touch with the details and we will confirm before you ship anything.
How long does post-processing take?
It depends on part size, quantity and the finish chosen, but many parts are finished within 24 to 72 hours of printing. Tell us your deadline and we will tell you what is achievable.
Will finishing change the dimensions of my part?
Processes that reflow a surface or add a coating can affect a critical fit, which is why we ask you to identify tolerance-critical dimensions before finishing rather than afterwards. Dyeing is the exception — it adds no measurable thickness at all. Every finished part is inspected for dimensional accuracy and surface conformity before it leaves us.
Can you colour or paint 3D printed parts?
Yes, by dyeing or by painting. Dyeing gives consistent black across a powder-bed production batch efficiently and without changing dimensions; painting and coating give any colour and sheen — matte, satin, gloss, metallic or soft-touch — with colour matching and multi-layer options for customer-facing parts.
Do you handle production volumes?
Yes. We finish single prototypes and repeat production batches, with the batch-to-batch consistency that matters when finished parts sit next to each other in an assembly.
How much does finishing cost?
