Overview

A-class means no excuses at arm’s length

“Painted” covers a lot of ground. A rattle-can coat hides a printed surface at a glance; an A-class finish survives inspection under showroom lights, from any angle, at arm’s length — the standard a car’s visible bodywork is held to. It is the difference between a part that looks finished and a part that looks manufactured.

We build that finish the way a bodyshop does: filled, primed, base-coated, clear-coated, then flatted and polished until the surface is deep, even and defect-free. It is slow, skilled work, and it is rare in a printing bureau — most stop several steps short. It is also what lets a 3D printed panel sit alongside moulded and metal parts without giving itself away.

The finish above is not a sample panel. It is A-class paint on real bodywork, finished in-house — the reflections doing exactly what a defect-free clear coat is meant to do: run unbroken across the surface with no orange peel, no haze and no witness of what is underneath.

That is the bar. Whether it is a single visible panel, a run of trim parts or a full body, the process and the standard are the same.

How it works

The A-class paint process

Show-surface paint is a stack of steps, and skipping any of them shows. This is the full build.

Fill & prime

The printed surface is filled and primed to bury layer lines and build a dead-flat base — the step that separates A-class from a coat of colour over texture.

Flat & refine

The primer is flatted back to a true surface, correcting any waviness before colour goes anywhere near it.

Base coat

Colour is applied in controlled coats — solid, metallic or pearl — matched to your reference or paint code.

Clear coat

A clear over the base gives depth and protection, and is the layer that ultimately carries the gloss.

Flat & polish

The clear is flatted and machine-polished to a defect-free, mirror-level finish — the stage most finishers skip and the one you can see.

Inspect & sign off

Every finished part is checked for surface conformity under a certified quality system before it leaves us.

What to know before you spec it

A-class costs A-class effort

The flat-and-polish stack is hours of skilled work per part. Where a part does not need show-surface quality, a standard single-stage paint costs far less — we will tell you when that is the sensible call.

The surface has to be prepared

A-class is built on a filled, flatted base. Deep layer lines or a poor print take more preparation, which is why finish and material choice are worth discussing before the part is printed.

Some geometry fights a mirror finish

Very fine detail, sharp internal corners and tight recesses are hard to flat and polish. We will flag anywhere on the part the finish cannot fully reach.

Match to an existing part has limits

Colour matching is close, but exact matching to a specific moulded component across materials and batches is something we assess honestly per project.

It is a finish, not a repair

A-class paint reveals a bad surface as readily as it flatters a good one. A part with the wrong wall thickness or warp is corrected at design, not under the clear coat.

It adds lead time

Unlike our 24–72 hour finishes, an A-class build runs across multiple cure and flatting stages. Tell us your deadline early and we will tell you what is achievable.

What is an A-class finish?
A-class, or Class A, is the standard applied to the visible bodywork of a car — a defect-free surface that holds up to inspection under bright light, from any angle, at arm’s length. On a 3D printed part it means the surface is filled, primed, base-coated, clear-coated and then flatted and polished to a deep, even, mirror-level finish with no layer lines, orange peel or haze.
How is A-class different from normal painting?
Normal painting puts colour over a part; A-class builds a finish. The difference is the preparation and the finishing: filling and flatting the surface truly flat before colour, and flatting and polishing the clear coat after it. Those extra stages are what most bureaux skip, and they are exactly what the eye picks up in the result.
Can you paint 3D printed parts to a show-car standard?
Yes — it is one of the finishes that sets us apart. We take printed parts through the full A-class stack in-house, the same way a bodyshop finishes visible panels, so a printed component can sit alongside moulded and metal parts without giving itself away. What colours and finishes can you do?
Solid, metallic and pearl colours in any sheen from dead matte to full gloss, plus soft-touch and textured coatings. We colour-match to a reference, a swatch or a supplied paint code, and can apply two-tone schemes, masked details and branding as part of the finish.
Can you match an existing colour?
Yes, closely — from an existing part, a swatch or a paint code. Exact matching to a specific moulded component across different materials and production batches has limits, so for a critical match we will assess it honestly with you per project rather than promise it blind.
Which materials can be painted to A-class?
Most of the materials we print — FDM, SLS, MJF and SLA — after appropriate surface preparation. Because the finish is built on a flatted base, the material and the print quality affect how much preparation is needed, so it is worth discussing before the part is printed.
Do I have to have A-class, or can I have standard paint?
Either. A-class is the top of the range and is priced accordingly; where a part does not need show-surface quality, a standard single-stage paint gives a clean, even finish for far less. We will recommend the level that fits the part and the budget.
How do I get a painted part quoted?
Painting is quoted per project because it depends on the standard, the part and the colour, so get in touch with what you need. We print, prepare, paint and inspect in-house in Shipston-on-Stour, Warwickshire, and ship UK-wide.
