Additive manufacturing for industry, sector by sector

Every industry asks additive manufacturing a different question. An automotive OEM wants PPAP paperwork and repeatability across a build series. A drone builder wants the lowest mass that will still carry the load. A machine builder wants a guard or a gripper on the line tomorrow, not in six weeks. A film production wants a hero prop that photographs like metal. The printers are the same — what changes is the material grade, the orientation strategy, the finishing route and the inspection regime we wrap around them.

RYSE 3D runs SLS, MJF, FDM and SLA across 24 production material grades from a single 8,000 sq ft facility in Shipston-on-Stour. Nothing is brokered out and nothing is offshored, so the engineer who reviews your CAD is in the same building as the machine that prints it. Volume production sits alongside prototyping here rather than behind it: the same instant quote covers one part or a hundred thousand.

MJF has no express tier — the process runs a full bed and a full cool-down, so 5–7 working days is the honest number. One FDM grade, PPA-CF, runs a reduced 340 × 320 × 340 mm envelope; every other FDM grade has the full 500 × 500 × 900 mm available. Honest limits

Where 3D printing is the wrong call for your industry

We would rather lose a quote than sell you a part that fails in service. These are the jobs we turn down or route elsewhere.

Very high volumes of simple geometry

If the part is simple, unchanging and you need half a million a year, injection moulding wins on unit cost once the tool is amortised. Additive earns its place when the geometry is complex, the volume is under six figures, or the design is still moving. We will say so if moulding is the better answer.

Metal load paths

We are a polymer bureau. Anything that has to carry a metal-grade load — suspension uprights, engine mounts, lifting points — is not ours. Fibre-reinforced polymer covers a lot of load-bearing brackets and covers, but it does not replace steel or aluminium where the safety case demands metal.

Certified flight or implant hardware

Our drone and orthopaedic work covers airframes, ground equipment, sockets, orthoses and fixtures. It does not cover certified passenger-carrying aircraft parts or implantable medical devices, which need approvals we do not hold. Ask us before you design around us.

Sustained service above the grade’s heat limit

Every polymer has a temperature at which it stops behaving like the datasheet. Continuous service near an exhaust, a heater or a downhole environment needs the grade chosen against the real duty cycle, not the peak figure. Tell us the temperature and the duration and we will match the grade or decline.

Optically clear parts larger than a small assembly

Our clear SLA resin gives genuine transparency at model and lens-prototype scale, but it is not window glazing and it yellows under prolonged UV. For large transparent panels, machined or cast acrylic is the right route.

Tolerances tighter than the process can hold

Additive holds good general tolerances across a bed, but a bearing fit or a sealing face measured in hundredths needs machining. We routinely print near-net and machine the critical features — say which faces are critical and we will plan for it rather than discover it at inspection.

Which industries use 3D printing?

Across them the common thread is complex geometry, changing designs or volumes below the point where a tool pays for itself. Can you 3D print production parts, not just prototypes?
Yes. Volume production sits alongside prototyping at RYSE 3D rather than behind it. Over 2.5 million components we have printed are in service, and our instant quote prices anything from a single part up to 100,000 parts with no tooling and no minimum order. MJF and SLS are built for repeatable end-use parts at batch and series volume, and large-format FDM covers bridge and low-volume production.
Do you work with automotive OEMs?
Yes. RYSE 3D has supplied parts into more than 25 vehicle programmes and holds PPAP level 1 to 4 approval alongside ISO 9001 certification. Typical work covers ducting, intakes, brackets, interior trim and bridge production while tooling is being cut or modified. What industries do you serve in the UK?
We serve all ten sectors listed above from a single 8,000 sq ft facility in Shipston-on-Stour, Warwickshire — central for the Midlands, Coventry, Birmingham, Oxford, Bristol, London and the South East — and ship parts UK-wide. Nothing is offshored and nothing is brokered out, so printing, finishing and inspection all happen in the same building.
Can additive manufacturing replace machining for my sector?
Sometimes, and we will tell you when it cannot. Additive wins on complex geometry, low to mid volumes, one-off spares and parts that would otherwise need a tool. Machining still wins where you need metal load paths, tolerances measured in hundredths, or a sealing or bearing face. A common answer is both: we print near-net in a fibre-reinforced grade and machine only the critical features.
What is the lead time for industrial 3D printing?
SLS, FDM and SLA run 1 to 3 working days on express and 5 to 7 working days as standard. MJF runs 5 to 7 working days and has no express tier, because the process needs a full bed and a full cool-down cycle. Finishing such as vapour smoothing, painting or assembly adds time, and your exact lead time is confirmed on the quote.
